When looking for a health insurance plan it’s important to understand the features of the plan type so you know what you can expect of your coverage. Plans can get complicated between the acronyms and jargon, so Your Health Idaho has put together a guide to assist you in choosing the right plan for you.

Health Maintenance Organization (HMO)

An HMO plan is one of the more limited plans you can choose as the services are delivered through a specific network of providers and facilities. If you choose this plan type, you can see any health care provider within the specified network, but you may need a referral from your primary care physician to see a specialist. You also may have to pay higher out-of-pocket costs for providers outside of the network.

Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)

A PPO plan provides more flexibility than an HMO plan. You will most likely not need a primary care referral to see a specialist and you can see out-of-network doctors. You may pay more for the out-of-network providers, but some of the cost may be covered.

Point of Service Plan (POS)

A POS plan is a mix of a HMO and PPO plan features. Like an HMO plan, a POS plan would most likely require a referral from a primary care physician for specialists. Like a PPO plan, you may see out-of-network doctors, but you may have to pay more.

What is a HSA?

An HSA is a Health Savings Account that allows you to set money aside on a pre-tax basis to use for qualified medical expenses. To qualify for a HSA, you will need a high-deductible plan. Usually, monthly premiums for health insurance plans are not a qualified medical expense.
