You got married! Now what?

Congratulations! You and your significant other tied the knot and now get to spend the rest of your lives together in sickness and in health. While we hope sickness doesn’t come around often, we know that it does come around. Having a health insurance plan ensures that not only are you covered financially as well in case of illness or an accident.

Special Enrollment Periods

For most couples, getting married is considered a Qualifying Life Event which means the happy couple will qualify for a Special Enrollment Period. Because you are experiencing a change to your household size, you can enroll in health insurance outside of the usual Open Enrollment that takes place in the fall.

Marriage only qualifies as a Special Enrollment Period if one person in the relationship currently has health insurance that qualifies as Minimum Essential Coverage. If neither individual has health insurance, there are other Qualifying Life Events that may apply and open a Special Enrollment Period. You can view those events on the Your Health Idaho website.

When you get married, you have 60 days to report your Qualifying Life Event, provide documentation, and enroll in a plan. Accepted documents include proof of insurance of at least one partner within the last 60 days and a marriage license, copy of court date, decree, or petition for name change for marriage, or a domestic legal document.
